Observation

觀察

After sketching out a style with the approaches above, the next step is to make sure that all the visual parameters are consistent, which may includes: color, concentration, balance, tension, visual center, contrast, details and overall impression lockup and etc.

1. Color

1. 顏色及留白空間

The “color” here refers to overall proportion of the positive and negative space rather than the actual color. As most Kanji characters are more complicated and denser than the Latin script, usually, Kanji would be made a little bit bigger and lighter. So the amount of the “ink” will be the same. If the two languages are made with the same color, it will make Kanji looks too heavy.

這裡的顏色指的是整體標準字的灰度,而非實體的顏色。由於漢字一般來說比歐文來得複雜,筆畫密度較高,所以在做搭配時面積會比歐文大些才不會顯得太密,漢字的顏色也應該稍淡。如果讓兩者的顏色完全一樣,反而會使漢字看起來更重。

2. Expansion and contraction

2. 收放

There is no such thing called x-height in Kanji , but “中宮”(Center Space) can be viewed as a similar concept.

Latin alphabets are constructed vertically with three layers one on top of another divided by x-height and baseline ⓘ, while every Kanji is constructed as a two-dimensional layout ⓙ. “Center Space” literally means the center box in a 3X3 metric, and the size of this center box will decide how modern the type looks. We can view Center Space as a x-hieght with two axes. Similar to x-height, a Kanji with contracted Center Space usually gives a more traditional impression, while expansive Center Space looks more modern. However, unlike x-height, the size of Center Space is totally perceptional. It can’t be measured with specific values.

3. Tension and balance

3. 張力與平衡

When Kanji and Latin Characters are set together, there is tension between their negative space. The tension between each character must be equal to the balance of the entire word.

字與字之間的負空間 (留白空間) 會形成一股張力,每個字母之間的張力必須相等才能讓整個標準字平衡。即使每個字之間的張力都很強,只要力量相等也能達到平衡。

4. Visual center

4. 重心

The visual center of the two languages should be on proportionally the same height. If we consider each Kanji as a two-dimensional image, we can find a visual center in each character, while the visual center of a Latin type is decided by the horizontal stroke design. Most of the horizontal strokes of Latin alphabets fall onto the Cap height, x-height and baseline, so the design of those two-story letters, such as A, B, E, F, G, H, P, R, S, X, Y and a, e, g, s, x, are the key to deciding where the visual center fall.

5. Contrast

5. 對比

The contrast of thick and thin stroke should be consistent between both scripts.

兩種文字的筆畫粗細對比程度應該要相應

6. Details

6. 筆畫細節

When we pair Kanji and Latin characters, we can bring in details from one to the other, such as the angle of the cut, serif, terminal shapes and so on ⓚ.

可以在起筆、收筆、襯線、圓點造型等等細節處互相帶入雙方的特色

7. Material and overall impression

7.材質感與整體印象

In terms of the consistency of the material, in addition to imagining the type drawn with the same tool as we mentioned above, we can also consider the idea of material as an abstract concept, such as "plumpness." For instance, think about how much air is inside the type? The overall impression can be tough, warm, or full etc ⓛ.

除了想像使用的工具這樣具體的概念之外,也可以用抽象的概念來表現材質上的一致性,例如「彈性」。想像如果裡面有空氣,這個空氣的飽滿程度是不是一樣的。整體給人的印象是剛毅的、溫潤的或是飽滿的等等

8. Lockup or individual version

8. 兩者的使用關係

The two scripts can be locked-up together or used as two individual versions of lettering depending on the marketing strategy. When the two scripts are locked-up, we need to adjust the relationship between the two scripts to maintain balance.

要考慮這兩種文字將會如何被使用。是兩個分開的並行版本,還是同時存在?如果同時存在,要如何佈局他們的並置關係(lockup)。兩種文字擺放在一起的整體外觀輪廓怎麼達到平衡等等,都需要經過客製調整。

除了大方向的風格配合之外,要使兩種文字傳達出一樣的性格,各方面都能儘量達到一致性,其中可能包含顏色、收放、平衡、重心、對比、材質感、筆畫細節與整體印象等等。
