Bilingual Lettering

Observation

觀察

When creating bilingual lettering, the form of the translation may match the other script perfectly, but sometimes they don’t share anything in common visually. The best scenario is to take the letterform into consideration in the naming stage. If the translation can not be altered, we can also look for other forms as alternative solution.

製作雙語標準字時,有時剛好能得到造型協調的譯文,也可能完全找不到兩者的共通點,最好的情況是在品牌命名階段時,就能將文字的外形也列入考量。但如果無法更改內容,也可以尋找其他筆畫結構作為替代方案。

As mentioned in the observation section, the density of Kanji character varies from a few strokes to sometimes more than twenty. The different of the density creates a visual rhythm in paragraphs, but when creating a logotype/lettering with a few characters, it may become a problem and make the logotype/lettering off-balanced. Sometimes this problem can be solved by using another character with similar meaning.

漢字的密度不一。在文章段落中,這樣的輕重讓閱讀有節奏感,但是作為標準字時通常只有數個字,盡量在可選擇的範圍內,挑選筆畫同質性較高的譯文,並且將整體平衡感列入考量。

Forms

筆畫

If the translation is not changeable, looking for alternative forms can also be a solution. For example, using single-story g or double-story g, connected y or two-stroke y? Same with Kanji, we can look up some alternative forms from the vintage books, handwriting style, or reference the forms from other Kanji-using countries.(6) We can also alter or simplify the form as long as the type is under the premise of being legible and aesthetically pleasing ⓜ.

若無法改變用字,找尋不同的筆畫形式也可以是一種解決方法。例如用小寫還是大寫?用單層或雙層的小寫g?一筆到底的y還是兩筆劃的y?漢字也相同,可以查閱古籍、俗體寫法,或參考各地區不同的寫法 (6) ,或在不失去結構美學及可辨識性的情況下,做出改變或是簡化的方案

(6) For example, the first stroke of "字" can be drawn as a point, but also be written as a short vertical stroke.

(6) 例如「字」這個字上面可以寫成一個點,也可以寫成一個豎。
